Saint Junipero Serra was a Spanish Franciscan priest who was born on November 24th, 1713, in Petra, Majorca, Spain. He is best known for his contributions to the Catholic Church in the New World as a missionary in California. Saint Junipero Serra is the patron saint of the Catholic Church in California and of Catholic missions in the United States and Spain.
Junipero Serra was a brilliant and ambitious young man who was drawn to the religious life from an early age. He was ordained as a priest at the age of 33, and soon after he joined the Franciscan order. In 1749, he was sent to the New World as a missionary, arriving in Mexico City. Over the next several years, he worked as a missionary in various parts of Mexico, winning many converts to the Catholic faith.
In 1769, Junipero Serra was given the opportunity to lead the first Catholic mission to California. He and a group of soldiers and other missionaries made the long journey north, and they established the first mission in San Diego. Over the next several years, Saint Junipero Serra founded nine more missions in California, including San Francisco and Santa Barbara. These missions not only spread the Catholic faith, but they also helped to lay the foundation for the modern state of California.
Saint Junipero Serra was known for his kindness, compassion, and love for all people, regardless of their background or beliefs. He treated the native peoples of California with respect and dignity, and he worked to help them improve their lives through education and other means. Despite facing many challenges, including opposition from other religious groups and the Spanish government, Saint Junipero Serra remained steadfast in his commitment to his mission and to the people he served.
Saint Junipero Serra died on August 28th, 1784, in Carmel, California. He was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis on September 23rd, 2015, during a Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. His feast day is celebrated on July 1st.
