Saint Dominic (1170-1221) is a Catholic saint and known for his dedication to preaching and his strong commitment to the education of the laity. He was born in Caleruega, Spain, in 1170 and the son of wealthy noble parents, but he chose to pursue a life of poverty and service to the Church. He was ordained a priest in 1203 and began to travel throughout Europe, preaching to the people and establishing schools and convents.
One of the most significant events in Saint Dominic's life was the founding of the Dominican Order in 1215. This religious order, also known as the Order of Preachers, was dedicated to the spread of the gospel through preaching and teaching. Saint Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers, as legend has it that he used a star to convert a heretic. He is also the patron saint of the falsely accused and a number of places. His feast day is celebrated on August 8th and his canonization was in 1234 by Pope Gregory IX, just 13 years after his death. His body is interred at the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna, Italy.
