Poetry: "Battlefield"

A woman, pregnant, travels alone on a journey
Through difficult terrain, rocky and desolate
She walked in sandals, the stones hard and hot
Her intended destination was her cousin’s home
The trip would be arduous and tiring –
But her cousin was six months pregnant
She needed help and the love of family
The woman walked up hills, through valleys
The hot Sun beat down upon her relentlessly
She eventually reached her cousin’s home
Upon entering, her cousin shouted with joy:
“Blessed are you among women and
Blessed is the fruit of your womb.”
“For what have I done to be worthy
Of the Mother of My Lord to be in my
Presence.” The woman replied: “My
Eyes have seen the glory of the Lord”
“My spirit rejoices in God My Savior”
“The Almighty has done great deeds
For me and Holy is His Name.”
The two women embraced with joy
The infants in their wombs leapt –
With happiness. The visit would last –
Three months of love and laughter
The women would both eventually give –
Birth to sons, who would change the world
Because that is how God works
Not with grand gestures or with –
Bold proclamations, not with trumpets –
Or audacious displays of power or might
His plans are initiated quietly
In the barren wilderness
In a visit between two “ordinary” women
On the edges of their society
He comes to the poor, the weak
He comes to the lonely, the downtrodden
Be not afraid, allow Him to visit
Allow Him into your heart
Allow Him to change your life
So you can in turn, and in your own way
Change the world with His message
