Yes, Virginia, There is a God
In November the Church dedicates its focus to the Poor Souls in Purgatory. But we know that our prayers and attention to their plight is not limited to this month alone. Their need for prayers and Masses last throughout the year. And often, as we are told by the saints, some souls need our prayers for many, many years.
So while we run about prepping for Christmas in an unlimited amount of ways, let us not forget these dear ones. Perhaps they come from our immediate or extended family. Recall how parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles made Christmas special with homemade treats, special gifts, and reading of scripture. As a child they probably put the wonder and joy of Christmas into your childlike world, creating cherished memories of a lifetime. They took you to church, gazed at the nativity with you, taught you to bake and made sacrifices to afford gifts for you.
Maybe you are a widow or widower. Then you may have many cherished memories of you and your deceased spouse during the Christmas season. Think of all the ways they made this time special for you. Recall all the time you shared at church together, their thoughtful gifts, cozy times by the Christmas tree.
Whether you are grieving a recent loss or fondly remembering a loved one who died decades ago, Christmastime is an excellent time to pray for their soul. What a beautiful way to thank them for their kindness while they were here. The saints tell us these dear souls are aware of our prayers. How beautiful that we can still share this special season together!!!!
This is truly a spiritual work of mercy. We may not know the true extent of our prayers in this lifetime. But rest assured these dear souls already do. What greater gift can we give them this Christmas than our prayers and Masses? Let's give them a blessed Christmas filled with our love and gratitude.
